As cars become more integrated with the technology in our lives, they can be filled with new dangerous distractions.
A recent study done by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety found that of the 30 cars tested in 2017, 23 were highly distracting to drivers. Many of the testers took their eyes off the road for up to 40 seconds, more then enough time to get into an accident.
Distracted driving is dangerous. National Highway Safety Administration reports that in in 2015, 3,477 people were killed and 391,000 were injured in motor vehicle crashes caused by distracted driving.

A recent study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has found that adults don’t buckle up in the back seat. 80% of the people surveyed did not put on a seatbelt when getting into the back of a car for a short trip.
Although safety belts are proven to save lives, more than half of the people who die in passenger vehicle crashes in the U.S. each year are unbelted. One person’s decision not to buckle up can have consequences for other people riding with them.

In our 6 hour defensive driving course we touch on many subjects, including drunk driving and distracted driving. It is tragic when we see the results of these mistakes in such a sad case.
A teen driver, already 3 times more likely to be in a car crash then an adult, was driving her younger sister and a friend. She was drunk and live streaming herself on Instagram. 25% of all crashes are caused by using your phone while 50% were with a drunk driver. The accident which occurred killed her sister and injured her friend. You can find the full story here.
We feel terribly for the families involved in this tragedy and hope this draws attention to the importance of operating your vehicle responsibly.
IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTICE! Please take a moment to check out the list of affected vehicles at the Department of Transportation website. Your vehicle may contain a recalled airbag. As stated by the DoT:
Takata air bags installed in tens of millions of U.S. vehicles are subject to recall due to a safety defect that may cause the air bag inflators to explode and cause serious injury or death… If your car or truck is included in the list of affected vehicles below, please contact your dealer and get your vehicle fixed as soon as parts are available.
Operating a safe and well maintained vehicle is one important piece of defensive driving. Want to learn more? Check out our current class schedule or take the 6 hour class now online!
